Shanghai: a first-timer’s guide

Seven days discovering Shanghai — Bund, Disneyland, water towns, museums, and cocktail bars.

Shanghai at a glance

Also called Hu or Shen, Shanghai grew from a treaty port into China's leading international finance and shipping centre, where the Bund faces the Pudong skyline across the Huangpu River.

On a first visit, The Bund, Shanghai Tower and Yu Garden reveal the city’s spatial character and history, while Soup Dumplings, Shengjianbao and Hairy Crab add the everyday food culture. Together they connect major landmarks, lived-in neighbourhoods and the pace of the modern city.

Where to stay in Shanghai

The Bund Area

This is the most practical first-visit base. Check the actual walk to a metro or major bus stop and group the nearest sights into one day.

French Concession

Choose this area when it anchors your itinerary. Staying nearby makes early starts, evening walks and local meals easier.

Lujiazui

This works well for a late arrival, early departure or short stay. Prioritise simple station access over a decorative hotel address.

Longer stays and local neighbourhoods

For four nights or more in Shanghai, consider a lived-in neighbourhood with restaurants, supermarkets and reliable public transport. It often offers quieter evenings and better value.

Shanghai: places you should not miss

Shanghai representative city view
A first look at ShanghaiBegin with a representative landmark, then connect the surrounding neighbourhood and local food into one coherent route.

The Bund

Allow half a day and check wind, rain, boat operations and the final return connection before setting out. Iconic 1.5km waterfront. Colonial buildings face Pudong skyline.

Shanghai Tower

Allow 2–3 hours and read the site layout before arrival so the visit has a clear focus. China's tallest at 632m. 118F observation deck.

Yu Garden

Reserve 2–3 hours and avoid the hottest or busiest part of the day; one focused circuit is better than rushing every corner. Ming Dynasty classical garden with lively bazaar.

Plane Tree Districts

Allow 2–3 hours and read the site layout before arrival so the visit has a clear focus. Wukang Road, then Anfu Road, then wet market, then Wuyuan Road, then Shanghai Library, then Hengshan bars.

Shanghai Museum

Choose two or three galleries and allow 2–3 hours; check reservation and weekly closing arrangements before travel. Choose either the People’s Square or East Museum exhibitions according to current reservations and your interests; do not attempt both in a rushed day.

West Bund cultural corridor

Choose two or three galleries and allow 2–3 hours; check reservation and weekly closing arrangements before travel. Museums, converted industrial buildings and long riverside paths show Shanghai’s contemporary cultural planning.

Longhua Temple and memorial area

Choose two or three galleries and allow 2–3 hours; check reservation and weekly closing arrangements before travel. The historic temple and nearby memorial landscape provide a quieter historical counterpoint to central Shanghai’s commercial districts.

Disneyland

Allow 2–3 hours and read the site layout before arrival so the visit has a clear focus. Full day Disneyland. Must-ride: TRON, Pirates, Soaring. Fireworks 8:30pm.

What to eat in Shanghai

Shanghai food is broader than one or two famous dishes. Begin with breakfast, noodles or a small snack, then plan one regional shared meal. Group restaurants by neighbourhood to reduce travel and see how local people actually eat.

Soup Dumplings

Delicate steamed buns with savory broth. Nanxiang at City God Temple. Eat it freshly steamed, fried or baked. Order a small portion first so you can compare another local snack nearby.

Shengjianbao

Pan-fried buns with crispy bottom. Dahuchun and Xiao Yang. Eat it freshly steamed, fried or baked. Order a small portion first so you can compare another local snack nearby.

Hairy Crab

Seasonal delicacy (Oct-Dec) with rich golden roe. Confirm market price, weight and cooking method before ordering; busy restaurants and light seasoning make freshness easier to judge.

Scallion Noodles

Choose a high-turnover specialist cooking each bowl to order; taste the broth and noodle texture before adding chilli, vinegar or extra toppings. Choose a specialist with high turnover, taste the broth and texture first, then add chilli, vinegar or condiments to preference.

Shanghai smoked fish

. Confirm market price, weight and cooking method before ordering; busy restaurants and light seasoning make freshness easier to judge.

Eight-treasure duck

. Order it as part of a shared meal and balance the table with vegetables, a staple and one lighter dish.

Crab-shell pastry

. Confirm market price, weight and cooking method before ordering; busy restaurants and light seasoning make freshness easier to judge.

Cifantuan rice roll

. Try it at a busy local shop, order a small portion and combine it with other flavours in the same neighbourhood.

Shanghai gifts and local souvenirs

Laodafang mooncakes

Taste the fresh version locally. For travel, buy only sealed, shelf-stable products with a clear production date and expiry.

White Rabbit candy

Buy from an established craft shop or museum store, check material and origin, and choose a compact object that travels well.

Yu Garden pear candy

Buy from an established craft shop or museum store, check material and origin, and choose a compact object that travels well.

Xiaolongbao

Buy from an established craft shop or museum store, check material and origin, and choose a compact object that travels well.

Practical tips for Shanghai

19 metro lines. Maglev 8min from airport. Disney Line 11. Keep your hotel address in Chinese, carry a power bank and allow extra time for station security, weekend traffic and weather changes. Limit each day to no more than two widely separated districts. Save hotel, station and attraction names in Chinese offline, and recheck tickets, weekly closures, weather and the final return connection before setting out.

Metro

19 lines covering every corner. Clean, air-conditioned.

Maglev

World's fastest: 430km/h in 8 minutes.

Taxi/Didi

Abundant and affordable. Starting fare ¥14.

Day trips and intercity transfers

For excursions from Shanghai, confirm the full station name, last return service and final scenic-area connection. Distant destinations should be treated as a full day, not added spontaneously in the afternoon.

Getting to Shanghai

By air

Shanghai Pudong and Shanghai Hongqiao international airports

Confirm the arrival terminal, then compare airport rail, shuttle bus and ride-hailing. For a late arrival, save the hotel address in Chinese before landing.

By rail

Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai and Shanghai South stations

Large cities can have several stations far apart. Check the complete station name before booking or hailing a ride, and allow time for security and walking transfers.

From the terminal

Plan the final transfer

Ride-hailing is usually simplest with heavy luggage, a late arrival or a hotel away from metro lines. Otherwise compare public transport first to avoid peak-hour road traffic.

Shanghai weather and what to pack

Four distinct seasons, a humid plum-rain period in early summer and hot midsummer conditions. The table uses rounded typical monthly averages for trip planning, not a live forecast.
